Baptists urged to be sensitive to those who hurt
“When Christ becomes a living presence within us, our hearts are broken by the things that break the heart of Jesus.”
Tony Campolo, professor emeritus at Eastern University in Pennsylvania in the United States, delivered these words at the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) Window on the World (WOW) banquet in Arlington, Virginia, on Saturday, February 28. When Christ becomes a living presence within the believer, “we become sensitive to those who hurt,” Campolo said.
Campolo, founder of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization that develops schools and social programs in several Two Thirds World countries and in cities across North America, called on Baptists, especially Baptists in the United States, to agitate on the behalf of those who suffer and are marginalized. “A democracy is not where the majority rules,” he declared. “It is where it is safe to be in the minority.”
The WOW banquet had as its theme, “Let justice roll down like waters,” and focused on human rights and religious freedom. Video presentations were made of a BWA interview with Zaur Balaev, a Baptist pastor in Azerbaijan who was arrested on what were regarded as trumped up charges as part of a broader campaign to undermine the Christian church in the South Caucasus country. Balaev was released from prison after protests were made by the BWA, the European Baptist Federation, and former United States President Jimmy Carter.
Another video presentation was made of a BWA interview with Batyr Nurov, a Baptist pastor from Turkmenistan who was imprisoned for his faith, and who now lives in exile in Norway after being released after pressure was brought by western countries.
A capacity crowd of more than 400 attended the banquet, which was held to coincide with BWA Executive Committee and auxiliary meetings that are being held February 27 to March 4 at the BWA Center in Virginia, close to Washington, DC.

Committee meetings underway
On Monday morning, committee members made their way through six inches of freshly fallen snow to arrive at the BWA Center in Falls Church, Virginia, for the start of the BWA Executive Committee meetings.

BWA Executive Committee meets
More than 100 persons from around the world are gathering in Falls Church, Virginia, close to Washington, DC, for meetings of the Executive Committee of the Baptist World Alliance as well as other auxiliary meetings.
Auxiliary meetings begin on Friday, February 27, with a meeting of the Baptist World Congress Core Committee as well as a BWA Consultation with Regional Leaders. Other auxiliary meetings to take place March 2-3 include those of committees for the BWA Men’s, Women’s, and Youth Departments, as well as division meetings such as Baptist World Aid and Evangelism and Education.
Standing committees such as Constitution and Bylaws, Personnel, and Membership will also meet.
The BWA Executive Committee will meet March 3-4 to decide matters of major importance. Some decisions made by the Executive Committee will be brought as recommendations to the General Council at its meeting in Ede, Netherlands, in July.
Among the matters to be addressed by the Executive Committee are amendments to the BWA constitution, the restructuring of the divisions for Evangelism & Education and Study & Research, and the filling of the new position of Director for the Division of Freedom and Justice, which was formally established by decision of the General Council in Prague, Czech Republic, in July 2008.
It is also expected that the recipient of the 2009 Denton and Janice Lotz Human Rights Award will be announced. The award will be presented during the General Council meeting in the Netherlands.
Other highlights of the Executive Committee are reports from the President, the General Secretary, regional leaders from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and North America, and the Budget and Finance Committee.
